The USS Liberty (AGTR-5) was attacked by Israel on June 8, 1967. During the attack by Israeli jet aircraft and torpedo boats, 34 American sailors were killed and 174 were wounded. The first focus of the attack was on the radio antennas; in addition, the Liberty’s communications were jammed by Israel. The intent to kill everyone on board and leave no survivors was clear.
Later, Israel claimed it was an ‘accident’ – even though NSA intercepts (denied by both the Johnson administration and Israel) captured an Israeli pilot’s transmission “but sir, they are Americans.”
A coverup was ordered and the Board of Inquiry led by Admiral Isaac Kidd concluded it was a tragic accident. The official report and other documentation was classified Top Secret and was hidden. All members of the crew were ordered to remain silent under threat of courts martial or worse (some crewmen commented years later that the meaning of the ‘or worse’ was clear).
While it was officially called an accident, members of the Board of Inquiry, Dean Rusk (Secretary of State), Admiral Thomas Moorer (Chief of Naval Operations); Captain Ward Boston (Chief Counsel of the Board of Inquiry) – among many others, all doubted the official story and believed it was a coverup.
I was told by an older Naval Officer that his classmate from the Naval Academy was on one of the two aircraft carriers in the Mediterranean when the Liberty was able to get a message out, calling for help. A number of F4 Phantoms were launched and had gone to after burner (top speed) to come to their aid. They were recalled on direct orders of Lyndon Johnson. Bob said his friend and everyone on board were beyond outraged.
For many – except for the survivors and the families of the victims – the attack was forgotten by most.
But as we approach the 60th anniversary – and recall the murders of other Americans by ‘our ally’ (e.g., Rachel Corrie, and a suspected role in the assassination of John F. Kennedy); the genocide in Gaza; and the slaughter in Lebanon – it is long past obligation to them to put an end to this relationship with a murderous ethnostate.
At the same time, the 2027 National Defense Authorization Act is moving quietly through Congress. It includes provision in Section 224 that would basically tie the Pentagon and Israel together: “promote the long-term integration of joint capabilities between the United States and Israel.” That effort will apparently include close ties on technologies and procurement – all without direct Congressional oversight of each action or funding. Congress people should be told in no uncertain terms this is not what the American people want.
